The Whispering Shadows of Old Dhaka

The humid air of Dhaka, thick with the scent of jasmine and exhaust fumes, often cloaks secrets. But in the labyrinthine alleys of Old Dhaka, where centuries-old buildings leaned precariously against each other, a different kind of chill seeped into the night. It was a chill that had nothing to do with the monsoon rains, and everything to do with the disappearances.

It began subtly. A street vendor, known for his booming laughter and vibrant turmeric piles, vanished without a trace. Then, a young woman, a talented kotha performer who sang tales of love and loss, failed to appear for her nightly performance. The police, overwhelmed by the city’s sheer density and the constant hum of daily life, initially dismissed it as petty crime or people simply moving on. But the whispers started, weaving through the crowded markets and into the dimly lit tea stalls.

They spoke of the “Khurer Gaan” – the sound of a strange, rhythmic scratching that some claimed to hear on moonless nights, emanating from the abandoned zamindar bari at the heart of Shankhari Bazar. Legend had it that the zamindar, a man consumed by dark arts and an insatiable greed, had made a pact with something ancient and malevolent. His soul, it was said, was trapped within the decaying walls, forever seeking to lure others into his spectral embrace.

Inspector Rahman, a man whose cynicism was as weathered as the city’s brickwork, scoffed at the folklore. He was a man of logic, of fingerprints and alibis. Yet, the mounting dread among the community, the palpable fear that silenced the usual boisterous nightlife, gnawed at him. He decided to investigate the zamindar bari himself, armed with only a flashlight and a heavy sense of foreboding.

The air inside the mansion was colder, the silence more profound than any he had ever known. Dust motes danced in the beam of his flashlight, illuminating faded tapestries and ornate, yet rotting, furniture. As he moved deeper into the house, he heard it – a faint, persistent scratching, almost like fingernails on aged wood. It was the Khurer Gaan.

Suddenly, a shadow detached itself from the wall, coalescing into a gaunt, spectral figure. Its eyes, hollow pits of despair, fixed on Rahman. A guttural whisper, seemingly from all directions at once, slithered into his mind: “One of us… one of us…” Before Rahman could react, the scratching intensified, and the very walls seemed to press in on him. He felt an icy grip, not of flesh and blood, but of pure, consuming dread.

When his team finally found Rahman days later, he was huddled in a corner, muttering incoherently about shadows and scratching sounds. The case remained unsolved, another dark legend woven into the fabric of Dhaka’s history. The disappearances, however, continued, and on moonless nights, those living near the abandoned zamindar bari swore they could still hear the faint, chilling rhythm of the Khurer Gaan, a sinister lullaby sung by the whispering shadows of Old Dhaka.
